When Is the Best Time to
Paint a House Exterior in Melbourne?

In Melbourne, autumn and spring usually give the best conditions for exterior painting: mild temperatures, lower humidity and fewer extreme days. Summer works with careful timing, and winter can work on dry, mild days. What matters most is the weather on the day the paint goes on and while it dries, not the month.

What weather does exterior paint need?

Every paint has application limits printed on the tin or in its data sheet. Typically these cover:

  • Minimum temperature. Both the air and the surface must be above it, and stay above it while the paint dries.
  • Dew point. The surface needs to stay a few degrees above the dew point so moisture doesn't form on wet paint.
  • Humidity. High humidity slows drying.
  • Rain. Paint needs time to dry before rain. A shower too soon can wash out or mark the finish.

A good painter checks the forecast and the surface itself, and reads the product's limits before starting each day.

Why does Melbourne weather make it tricky?

Melbourne is known for changing quickly. A warm morning can turn into a cold change and rain by mid-afternoon, and clear autumn and winter nights can bring heavy dew. In practice, that means:

  • Starting once the morning dew has dried off.
  • Stopping early enough that the paint can dry before the evening dew.
  • Watching for cold fronts and moving to sheltered sides of the house when needed.

Can you paint in summer?

Yes, with planning. Hot surfaces make paint dry too fast, which can leave lap marks, brush marks and poor adhesion. Dark colours absorb a lot of heat, so a west-facing wall in full afternoon sun can get much hotter than the air.

The usual approach is to follow the shade: paint each side of the house when it is out of direct sun. On very hot or windy days, exterior painting may need to pause.

Can you paint in winter?

On mild, dry days, often yes. Short days and long-lasting dew shrink the working window, and some days won't be suitable at all. Winter exterior jobs simply take more flexible scheduling.

What about preparation before painting?

Exterior preparation also needs dry weather. Washed surfaces have to dry fully before filling and priming. Timber that has soaked up rain needs time to dry out, or the paint can blister later. This is one reason a well-run exterior job is sequenced around the weather from day one.

How long does an exterior paint job last?

It depends on the surface, its exposure to sun and weather, the preparation and the paint. A properly prepared surface painted with a premium exterior paint lasts much longer than a rushed job. North- and west-facing walls usually show wear first.

How should you plan an exterior repaint?

  • Book your quote early. Autumn and spring are popular, and you will have more choice of start dates.
  • Allow for weather delays in your timing, especially before events or a sale.
  • Choose colours ahead of time and test samples on more than one side of the house.
  • Trim plants back from walls and clear the area around the house.

How Heathurst handles exterior work

We plan every exterior job around the weather and the product's limits, and we won't paint in conditions that put the finish at risk. Surfaces are washed, repaired, sanded and primed properly first, then finished in premium Dulux exterior paint. See our exterior painting service, or browse finished homes in the gallery.
